Bay Hill is renowned for its challenging holes, and the par-5 sixth is no exception. While some players conquer this hole, others meet a watery demise. Tommy Fleetwood, the Englishman and Ryder Cupper, etched his name into tournament lore during the second round.
Fleetwood’s day had been less than stellar, with three bogeys in the opening five holes. But as he stood on the sixth tee box, hope flickered. A promising tee shot positioned him for a potential eagle. Destiny, however, had alternate plans.
From 236 yards out, Fleetwood’s ball found the water—not once, but twice. And then, astonishingly, a third time. An entire sleeve of golf balls vanished into the lake. The meltdown unfolded as follows:
Tee shot: Wet.
First approach shot: Wet again.
Second approach shot: Splash!
Third approach shot: Still wet.
The outcome? A quintuple bogey TEN. Fleetwood’s dreams of making the cut sank, leaving him well beyond the projected line. It was a “Tin Cup” moment that left fans incredulous.
Yet, as disastrous as Fleetwood’s 10 was, it pales beside John Daly’s legendary 18 on the same hole in 1998. Yes, you read that correctly—Daly carded an 18. Impressive, even by Roy McAvoy’s standards. Fleetwood’s misfortune won’t match that record, but it’s a tale etched into Bay Hill’s memory. Good luck to anyone attempting to surpass Daly’s 18 this weekend!
