Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches 2024: Round 1

Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches 2024: Round 1

The Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches is teeing off at the picturesque PGA National’s Champion Course in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. As the first event of the PGA TOUR’s annual Florida Swing, this tournament promises thrilling golf action, star-studded lineups, and a $9 million purse. The tournament features 19 of the top 50 players in the Official World Golf Ranking.

In round 1, the weather conditions were ideal for scoring. PGA National, often known for its challenging winds, offered a rare calm day for the competitors. Rory McIlroy, currently ranked No. 2 in the world, acknowledged that the course conditions were unusually favorable: “You’re not going to get this course much easier.”

Chad Ramey, a relative newcomer to PGA National, made a memorable debut in the opening round. He shot a bogey-free 7-under 64, showcasing precision and consistency on the greens.

Ramey’s past appearances in this event (formerly known as the Honda Classic) were forgettable, but this time, he seized the opportunity. His solid performance included five birdies in the first seven holes.

S.H. Kim, another contender, matched Ramey’s score, sharing the 18-hole lead. Kim’s round featured an eagle and five birdies, including a crucial one on the finishing hole.
A group of five players—Cameron Young, Ryan Moore, Chesson Hadley, Austin Eckroat, and Andrew Novak—also played impressive rounds, finishing just one stroke behind the leaders with 6-under 65s. Notably, David Skinns, who played in the afternoon, narrowly missed a birdie putt on his final hole that would have tied him for the lead.

On Friday, McIlroy will tee off from the 1st tee at 12:40 p.m. ET alongside defending champion Chris Kirk and last week’s winner, Jake Knapp. Some other groupings include Martin Laird, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, and Ben Griffin teeing off early from the 1st tee. Corey Conners, Matt Wallace, and Billy Horschel who form another exciting trio. Keep an eye out for Cameron Young, who is next best in the betting odds, and Russell Henley.

Looking forward to Round 2!
